Hunting with my Vizsla
![]() I’ve bought my first vizsla about five years ago and I love every minute with him. Not only is he a terrific bird dog but as loyal a vizsla as anyone can have.
After hunting pheasant without a dog, and watching other hunters in the field having so much more success than I, I came to the conclusion that I needed a bird dog.
He was about three months old when we went to pick him up from a wonderful vizsla breeder in Kansas. Fourteen hours from Chicago to Witchita was what we had to endure to see my first vizsla. My wife, my son and I left our home about five a.m. on our journey to pick up our gorgeous vizsla puppy. The trip was long and we did run into some traffic through St. Louis, but I didn’t care I was getting my first vizsla.
My wife named him Jackson after Jackson Brown, and his name fits him perfectly as vizsla names go. I took Jackson hunting as soon as the season began even though he was only twelve weeks old and we were camping close by. He stayed close to my legs as we walked the field not caring about any birds.
I decided to have him trained. It only took a two and a half week course when he was nine months old to be ready to point some pheasants for me. The first time that my Vizsla locked up on a bird was such a thrill that I forgot about flushing the bird and just stared with pride at my pup knowing that I am very lucky to have Jackson as my hunting companion.
Vizsla pups , I have found are just like what my research has shown. They are smart, loyal, protective and loving. I know that I will continue to own a terrific Vizsla pup for years to come.
