Fishing The Florida Keys

Fishing in the Florida Keys is the most fun fishing that you’ll ever have. I can safely say that chances are that you will catch fish, maybe not 200 lb. tarpon on every cast, but can honestly say that you will not be disappointed.
The first time that I visited the beautiful Florida Keys was the most relaxing vacation that I ever was on. My wife and I flew to Key West and the flight from Chicago was great and the people were very friendly. along with fishing you can snorkel, sail  on your own or on a charter, and of course there is always shopping and sightseeing. You can also rent your own boat and go fishing,  diving or just cruise the many little islands that you can find in the southern part of the Keys.

Back to the fishing, we hired a small charter boat with a captain that looked like Hemingway. It was a small 16 foot boat with plenty of room for fishing with spinning rods as we were casting to shadows in the water that were pointed out by the captain. He took us to the flats, which was where the water was only a few feet deep. The white sand was the perfect background to see the dark shadows of fish that were cruising the shallows for a meal.
The first fish that we hooked was a small permit, small but powerful. It was amazing to feel the strength of this little fish. He did come off the hook as he neared the boat though. That’s why it’s called fishing and not catching. Any way the next fish was a bonefish, which we did get in the boat and released. At this point the captain stated that this was enough of a warm up and time to go fishing for the mighty barracuda. We caught so many barracuda that morning that I got actually tired of fishing. My wife caught the first one that was about 15 lbs. She was so very excited of her catch that she started to brag a little as all I could manage to hook were smaller 10 pounders, 4 to be exact. My next one though proved a bit more of a challenge. As I cast a long, colored tube with treble hooks in it as far as I could past a couple of those shadows, I hooked a barracuda that weighed about 20 lbs. He was very acrobatic as I reeled him in. Just as I got him close to the boat he leaped out of the water and jumped a 30 foot rainbow right in front of me. This was the most exciting fish I ever had tugging my line.

My wife won the battle of the largest fish though. She cast her tube about 80 feet in front of the boat past a large dark shadow, and as luck would have it she hooked the biggest fish that I ever witnessed. She fought the fish for about forty five minutes and the captain complimented her on doing everything right in playing the fish. She brought the toothy critter to the side of the boat and the captain raised it up and into the boat. Sleak and silver with a mouthful of teeth, he estimated the fish to weigh in at 35 lbs. It was his charter’s biggest barracuda of the season. My wife won this large fish battle but I’ll try to out fish her next time, which she always wins anyway. We can’t wait until we see the blue water again. For us Florida is the fishing capitol of the world. Thanks for your interest.                      Tom Smola    email     turkeyfinder@comcast.net
